Part of the government’s experiments with psychotomimetic drugs in the 1950s, these are among the 9 drawings created over 8 hours by an artist under the influence of LSD. The medic administering the experiment was the model.

Upon completing the drawing the patient starts laughing, then becomes startled by something on the floor.

Patient retreated to the bunk, spending approximately 2 hours lying, waving his hands in the air. His return to the activity box is sudden and deliberate, changing media to pen and water colour. Patient makes the last half-a-dozen strokes of the drawing while running back and forth across the room.

16777216 is a new online work by Richard S. Mitchell, a San Francisco-based artist with a background in video. 16777216 is viewable through the Jancar Jones Gallery’s website from August 28th until September 4th. The work consists of over 16.7 million frames, each a color in the RGB color model, displayed at 25 frames per a second. Colors are displayed when the web browser synchronizes with the server, where the colors slowly move from black towards white.

After checking out the Ed Ruscha exhibit at the Moderna Museet (Fifty Years of Painting, nice!), we found this half-sunken boat for sale outside the old torpedo factory nearby.

Alvar Aalto worked at this studio in Munkkiniemi, a neighborhood in Helsinki, from 1955 onward. It’s quite a relaxing space, in the middle of an otherwise residential area. I can imagine this was a nice place to work. Something I didn’t know: The space was designed and built during a difficult economic time, some of the walls inside are made merely of cardboard with a strengthening coating, in some cases specially engineered to support the walls of heavy windows.

One woman, a resident of Suomenlinna since 1945, describes her home island this way: “This is a very comfortable community. We share our joys and sorrows here. You can be alone if you want, but you won’t feel lonely here. Helpful neighbours and friends is a given at Suomenlinna.”

My Mother’s Spoon Bread

¾ cup corn meal (white)
½ cup sweet milk (about)
2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
1 Tbs sugar
3 eggs, separated
3 tbs melted shortening

Sift meal into bowl. Pour on boiling water, stirring all the while until all meal is thoroughly scalded and mixture is consistency of thick mush. Dissolve salt, sugar, and baking powder in sweet milk. Add egg yolks and shortening. Lastly add beaten egg whites. Bake at 375 for 40 min.
